According to their most recent seasons playing a decent number of games at 1st, Morse last year and LaRoche this year, Morse is around a 10 runs per 135 games below average 1st baseman while LaRoche is around a 10 runs per 135 games above average 1st baseman. And that is just fielding their own position. When you factor in the number of poor throws LaRoche saved his fellow infielders that difference increases.

Over a full season I would estimate the defensive difference between those two at 1st is 30 runs. That isn't insignificant IMO.
