He's only trying to maximize his clients' contract value by encouraging this type of behavior. The statement has even less credibility coming from him.
In the new environment, star players will become UFAs at 25 - 27. Why in the hell would you even bother trying to poach them before that unless you're planning on signing them for like 10 years? And going for average non-stars doesn't make sense, because those guys tend to be affordable as UFAs.
Picks and cheap prospects are worth way more now under the cap than they ever were before; GMs can't fill the team with UFAs to compensate for having a ****** farm team.
