Orr, Gretzky, Howe and Lemieux seem pretty unanimous - and obvious. I like the Bettman suggestion. It certainly seems to vary fan base to fan base from some of the other names mentioned. My parents told me all about Terry O'Reilly, Gerry Cheevers and the Espositos growing up, so those are old names I know well, while other people might think of other teams first.


I don't think that any of the people whom trophies are named after are very iconic.... so they've got a trophy, who remembers them? Not many people who are alive. They simply know it as part of the history of the sport.

For me, even though every name has been mentioned several times, these are the names I'd shove down the throats of my future children as far as players to emulate are:

Orr
Datsyuk
Sakic
Yzerman
Stevens

Yes, I omitted The Great One. Yes, I deleted his name from my OP and replaced it with Datsyuk.
