Wow... that's very pessimistic. 3 years of missing the playoffs is a long time.
I assume we miss this year, but after that, our D-core will include a chunk of guys eating minutes in their prime years (given role)
N. Shultz will be 32 next year... no reason he won't be the solid guy he already is
Smid will be 28 next year... the hiccups in his development will be ironed out
Petry will be 27 next year... should at worst be a solid #3
Thats a very solid 3 of our 4 top Dmen that should be able to keep pucks out of the net (at worst)
In addition to that:
Shultz will be in his softmore year... yes I could see that a challenge given limited NHL exposure this year
Whitney could be healthy (or out of the game). If he's gone, insert a UFA. If he's here, assume 2010 Whitney... he'll only be 32 years old.
Assume Peckham or Teubert take the bottom pairing strongman role.
That leaves only one spot for a rookie next year.
It won't be the strongest D after the top 3, but by year 3 you can easily expect Shultz is worthy of top 2 minutes.
