Speed wasn't as big an advantage in the "old NHL" as it is now. Players like Gionta and Briere can now romp like gazelles and thereby increase their scoring dramatically, but Ribeiro can't. The importance of speed in the "new NHL" also applies to fast Dmen. Slow forwards now have less room in which to operate against fast Dmen. This is one of the changed circumstances that may help explain Ribeiro's diminished scoring.
