there was this thing don cherry calls "the gear" where a guy can be skating at almost top speed while carrying the puck, and then either slow down to freeze the defender before speeding back up, or hit an even higher speed to blow right by that defender.

that to me is a truly great skater. speed is one thing, but the level of control required to do this is staggering.

off the top of my head, orr, bure, and niedermayer could all do this. i spent a lot of years trying to figure out how to do this when i was younger-- and i'm a pretty good skater for someone who never played in a competitive league-- but it was just so far beyond my physical abilities. firing off a wrist shot in mid-stride too. how did bure do that?
