This is a variation of the concept that was floated about trading cap space and contract $$ is it not? The obvious difference is that the buyout team would need to find a partner first in the trade sceanrio, but the realtiy is that the buyout team would need to know there was a team willing to sign the player first anyway.

Redden bought out at 2/3. Rangers pay him roughly $4.4m and acquiring team pays him $2.2m but has entire cap hit count against them?
First of all, I am not sure how many (if any) teams in the league would be willing to play with the Rangers on that one. If the buyout is 1/3, nobody would be interested.

I am not sure this concept works in all cases.
