In 1918 the season was 22 games. As late as 1942, the season was 48 games. Up to 1946, it was 50 games. Then it started to rise to current number of games, from 60, 70, even more, and eventually 82.
There's no magic number to indicate how long a season should be. As long as the guys have played enough to be at the top of their game when playoffs start, I'm happy.
