I know I'm not a NHL player, but I play like it's game #7 of the SC finals in my pick-up league. I find it hard to believe that a pro athlete will give a "so-so" effort in a lesser league, just to avoid injuries.
These guys want to be the best night in/night out, that's just the mentality a pro athlete has to have cause there's so much competition that if you snooze too long, someone will bump you down a peg or two.
Just my opinion.

This is true, but this is also a unique situation. These guys didn't know how long they would/will be there. If you thought you were just going down for a few weeks would you go full out and risk injury before getting back to the NHL? I think of it kind of like a conditioning stint for the guys who are locks. I'm sure not all players are like that, but from what I saw of Albany it didn't look like certain guys were giving all they had. Not to say they were dogging it, they just weren't going to put themselves into any kind of dangerous situation.
