I find it hard to understand how Luke Schenn apparently left a huge hole on the Leafs blueline when he was mostly riding the pine under Carlyle.

Aulie showed some promise at the end of the 2010-11 season, but came to camp expecting a spot (when Franson and Gardiner were suddenly the upstarts). Even at that point, Schenn was looking dubious on the blue-line, but was one of those players granted a roster spot for past considerations, contrary to the preached "Meritocracy".

Franson and Gardiner are what made both Schenn and Aulie expendable. Burke feels that the game is moving further and further away from the big-bodied, slow moving defencemen.

Aulie and Schenn (and Franson) are basically the same type of player (although Franson shows more offensive upside). Burke believes that the Gardiners, Riellys, Liles' and Phaneufs represent the future on the blue lines. In the case of Phaneuf, power and crushing hits aren't necessarily no longer options, but few players can combine power with speed, so it's a take-what-you-can-get mentality.

Aulie didn't then and still doesn't provide anything to the Leafs' roster they would be missing.
