I think that the Nords would help the Habs because people would likely follow the two teams. They would love one and hate the other but TV ratings would be through the roof, espcially when the would play each other. Rivalries are always good for sports, so with the passion involved more and more people would follow the two teams.
In Québec (the province) hockey is a religion, so with the Nords back in town it would just help hockey as a whole. More kids would play the game, more of them would reach the NHL and therefore, everybody would benefit. When the Nords left hockey decreased a little bit in the province every year. Recently with the Habs making it back towards the top, it changed but the arrival of a team in Quebec City would just make it GREATER, IMO.
Actually, the reason why they hate each other is pretty simple. Québec City people think that they're village is the best. And act like it. Montrealers think that Québec City IS a village and act like it when with Québec City people.
Québec City has always had an inferiority complex towards Montreal, and it reflects in their defensive mode when talking about their city or its accomplishments. They win a junior championship and they go bezerk. As if it was the first time it happened. Meanwhile, Rimouski and Gatineau laugh.
It happened again earlier this spring when the Premier was asked why he was in Montreal more often than in Québec City (same song about Montreal always being favored). It's an old tune, but the same underlying fact: Québec City yearns Montreal's status as the Métropole of the province. So much so that the PQ had the Québec City region called La région de la Capitale Nationale!!! The real Capitale Nationale is right accross my city: Ottawa. Not Québec City.
It's the same inferiority complex that Ottawans have towards Torontonians.
