Though injury-riddled, Stars prevail sitting at 5th in the West
December 1, 2012

Jamie Benn after scoring a recent goal against the Nashville Predators in a 4-1 win

These last two months have been up-and-down for the Stars. Within the first two weeks, the team lost two of its star players, Kari Lehtonen and Derek Roy. Luckily, the injuries only lasted for a week each and the team seemed not to falter because of some of the minor-leaguers stepping up like Scott Glennie and Maxime Fortunus. "Yeah, I'm really happy with the teams play this year," said head coach Glen Gulutzan, "We really have had a better production offensively this year compared to last year. Our AHL team and us both play a similar game which is why our minor league guys can fit in the NHL really quickly." He went on to say how once again Richard Bachman has stepped up when the team lost Lehtonen.

Continuing with offensive production, one guy on the roster having a particularly good year is Jamie Benn. He currently ranks 7th in the league in goals with 11 and leads the Stars in points with 19, while Loui Eriksson is close behind with 16. Defensively, the team is doing well with the 2nd best penalty-kill percentage with 91.9%.

The team has recently has had a lot of returning faces to the line-up. But recently the team lost a key player. Captain Brendan Morrow was injuried in a game two days ago against the Edmonton Oilers. We got a chance to talk to line-mate Milan Hejduk who saw the hit happen, "Brendan [Morrow] was going in for the puck off a dump and was speeding past Ryan [Whitney] but he didn't see behind him Shawn [Horcoff] coming at him full speed. SHawn checked him into the boards and all I saw was Brendan laying on the ice in pain." It turned out Brendan broke his wrist and was taken off the ice and out of the game. The team doctor told us they can't be sure how long he will be out but they say it might be soon if they identify the bone to only be slightly broken.

Tonight the Stars will be facing the Pittsburgh Penguins who are sitting 1st in the East and it will be and interesting and most likely physical showdown. Here is the lineup for tonight's game against Pittsburgh:

Loui Erikkson "A" - Jamie Benn "A" - Jaromir Jagr
Ray Whitney - Derek Roy - Michael Ryder
Cody Eakin - Vernon Fiddler - Milan Hejduk
Erik Nystrom - Travis Morin - Radek Dvorak

Alex Goligoski "A" - Stephane Robidas
Trevor Daley - Philip Larsen
Aaron Rome - Paul Ranger

Kari Lehtonen
Richard Bachman
