I can understand choosing Florida for a lot of reasons, but there's a lot of misconceptions about playing in Detroit. Sure, the city itself is bad. But Oakland county and the surrounding areas are some of the wealthiest in the nation. An old teammate of mine lived down the road from Datsyuk, in a beautiful lake community with golf courses in every direction. Other than driving back and forth to the Wings parking garage, a player isn't really going to have much interaction with the bad parts of Detroit.

I choose Detroit because of family ties and the relative popularity of hockey, while the winning tradition of the last 15 years is a nice bonus. I also don't like humidity that much, and enjoy my share of snowfall each year.
