McDonagh is a close second, but I would build around Subban. He puts up points, hits, blocks shots, plays with an edge, gets under opponents' skin enough to draw a ton of penalties, and he is still getting better.
I love Hamonic, as well, to be honest, but I just think of him as more of a steady support defender, not a leader type of defender around which you build a team.
Fowler is not in the conversation (sorry, Anaheim fans, no insult intended).
Schultz would have to do something at the NHL level for me to even look at him.
So:
Subban
McDonagh
Hamonic
Fowler
Schultz
That is the order of preference if I can pick from them.
