exactly...we were going to lose either richter or cloutier at the end of the year for nothing...

and that was before all of richter's injuries (his first knee injury was later that year) there was no reason to suspect that we'd have a problem with a 30 year old richter...

also while that trade clearly didn't work out, i have little problem with it compared to other deals that the rangers made because atleast the intentions were good. unlike all the deals where the rangers go after overpaid, over-the-hill vets, the deal was made with the intention of getting a franchise player in the draft (which brendl was projected to be by most)...

if you want to say that we drafted the wrong guy and should have gotten someone like havlat or jackman that is one thing, but for a team that needs young players and prospects desparately, trading for a top pick is never a bad idea
