CANADA WEST - 2012-13 mid-term report

Finally, I have the mid-term report for the Canada West. I have saved it to the end because it is the only conference I get to see live.

Two preliminary comments: One, the CW teams did not play any interlocking games against the other CIS conferences. Two, I did not expect this conference to have two of the top three ranked teams in the CIS. So here goes my team-by-team comments.

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS

The Evil Monkeys lead the conference and the CIS rankings. They had few new recruits this year, simply because they did not need more. They returned basically a full roster from last year.

They also started with an ambitious schedule (8 pre-season games), starting ahead of everybody else on September 4th. They jumped all over a comparatively disorganized Bison squad in the opening weekend with a home sweep. IMO, they probably should have scheduled some tougher opponents. They had four games against ACAC teams.

However, 3 games in they appeared to hit a wall. They lost once to the New-Cougars-on-the-Block and twice more to the Banjo-Mutts for a 3 game losing streak. In each game, though, the Monkeys outshot their opponents (by 14 or 15 shots) and could easily have been rolling along unbeaten. In fact, the only tight game they had was when they beat Regina in a shoot-out.

That is, until they played a second series against Manitoba. That series exposed their flaw: They are not big fearsome Gorillas. They are tiny little Monkeys. The big bad Bisons pushed them around and generated oodles of great scoring chances. Mu-u-ucha (his Monkey name) was fabulous in goal in game 1, stopping two shorthanded breakaways and at least another dozen great saves on odd-man chances. It may well be that they are perfectly built to dominate and obliterate the less-skilled teams, or for that matter a relatively young, small team like Team Canada. So, would they be able the Bisons in a 3-games-in-3-days playoff series?

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES

The Banjo-Mutts have racked up the wins, but it seems that the prevailing opinion is that they are flattered by their record. They have a 3-1 record against the other A teams, but they could easily have been 0-4. They were outshot and outplayed in every game. But, they have a guaranteed host team berth in the University Cup to fall back upon.

My observation when they played Manitoba was that when their top line was on the ice they were competitive. When their first line was on the bench, they were thrilled if they could just get the puck out of their own end without giving up a goal.

In the home stretch they host Manitoba, UBC, and Calgary and have a home-and-home against Regina. Their away series are with Alberta and Lethbridge. IMO, if they can even claim one point against the Bisons they should be able to claim at least second place and a first round bye.

|> [League Stat team stats page]

MANITOBA BISONS

The Bisons had a lot of turnover this year. Up front they usually have two lines of first year Bisons. While the players recruited had better junior stats than the players they replaced, they are first years replacing fourth or fifth years. Logically, in such situations one expects such teams to show improvement in the second half of the season.

There are signs this is happening for the Bisons. In the last series before the break the Bisons took 3 points off the Evil Monkeys, and it would have been 4 had it not been for either their failure to cash in on several golden opportunities or the Monkey goaltending, depending on what way you want to look at it. The 2nd and 3rd lines have started scoring, the 1st line and defence are as good as any in the CIS, and the Deckert/Caligiuri combo has compiled competitive stats over the last 2 years.

One thing about this year's CW: The lower echelon teams are not as competitive as they were even two years ago. Regina has exceeded expectations, and UBC and Calgary will not often be blanked against anybody. But it is hard to see Lethbridge and Mount Royal knocking off an A level team down the stretch. The Bisons trail the Banjo-Mutts by 5 points. Even if they get a 4-1 series win on points, they would be 2 points behind and in a tight spot to play catch-up.

UBC THUNDERBIRDS

The Tweety-Birds have been threatening to join the big schools in the CW at the top of the standings for years but it never seemed to happen. Last year was one where their recruits failed to elicit the usual fan-fare. But the team responded by looking better on the ice than they did on paper, for the first time since I started watching this league. IMO they got excellent mileage from many Junior 'A' recruits.

Last year UBC surprised everybody by charging into 4th place before a late-season swoon allowed the Bedrock Boys to hurdle past them and then beat them 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Once again, UBC has jumped ahead of the Extinct Lizards, but only by one point. The two teams meet on January 4th and 5th in British California. No need to embellish the importance of that one.

UBC is a threat against the A level teams, yet they are also vulnerable to the C level teams. They have had a funny non-conference schedule. They played SFU twice, once winning in overtime and then winning 8-0. They played two ACHA sides, winning 8-2 and then scrambling for an OTW. These are teams they should hammer, but they only do so one night and not on the other. They also have a win, a loss, and a tie against NCAA Div 1 teams.

Perhaps UBC's threatened move to the NCAA prevented them from getting their share of major junior recruits. With a solid annual crop of players right on their doorstep one would think this would be one of the better programs in the CIS. Can they finally step up?

CALGARY DINOS

The Bedrock Boys went to the nationals in 2011 and were deemed to be a program on the rise. But last season was a disappointment, though tempered by a playoff rally where they beat UBC and Manitoba then went to triple overtime in game 3 against Saskatchewan in the final. So entering this year one could say they showed resilience last year by rallying in the playoffs and so all is well. But something seems amiss. They have had some high points, such as an 8-0 win over the Banjo-Mutts. Their only other win against an A level team was a home ice shoot-out win over Manitoba.

I feel safe in stating that the prevailing opinion was that their recruits were not as good as their departed players. However, they have the same goaltenders and enough veterans at all positions that they are fully capable of beating any A level team on any given day. It seems that they and UBC are on a collision course for a quarter-final playoff series once again.

REGINA COUGARS

No team amazes me more than the Banjo-Cats. I saw them play the Bisons in pre-season and thought that they were actually worse than the last place team from the year before. The pre-season coaches' poll had them ranked a distant last, and I agreed with that prognostication. Then when I saw them again in the regular season, my opinion was confirmed.

But in-between the games I saw, it must be said that these felines racked up some decent wins. They somehow managed 2 points against UBC, 4 against Lethbridge, 2 each against Calgary and Mount Royal, 3 against Saskatchewan, and 1 against Alberta. That is down-right respectable. There are teams in playoff positions in the AUS and home-ice playoff positions in the OUA who would have trouble matching that stretch. Then after being out-classed twice in Friendly Manitoba, they again split with UBC. I am confounded. They have to be ranked in the B level, but it is not hard to imagine them having a dismal second half.

|> [League Stat team stats page]

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS

The New-Cougars-on-the-Block got off to a rough start due to a very tough schedule. They opened with series against the three best teams and this put them in a tough spot from day one. On the positive side, they are done with Alberta and Saskatchewan. On the negative side, they trail the Old-Cougars-in-a-Banjo-Band by a full 8 points and only have 10 games to play.

Also, their results have been getting worse as the season has worn on. They were 2-1-1 in pre-season (all games decided by one goal). They were within seconds of going to OT against Saskatchewan and stole a win off the Apes. Since then they have had it rough. They closed the first half going 3-11, and 7 of those losses were by 3 goals or more.

|> [League Stat team stats page]

LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The H0rny Ones are, to say the least, a disappointment. Most pundits thought they would be fighting it out with the two sets of Cougars for the 6th and final playoff spot. But back-to-back sweeps against Regina and UBC back in October cast the die. I saw them after they had a much-need bye week in November. Although they played it as tough as possible against the Bisons, chippiness is no substitute for talent. Teams will be looking at them as the free space on the bingo card.

They need to win at least 10 out of 12 remaining games to steal 6th place. They ended the first half with losses by 9-4, 10-1, and 4-0. Draw your own conclusions.
