The mathematics of a 48 game season

To the best of my knowledge, the number 48 is being kicked around because is the number of games played in the (94) 95 season.

There were less teams then.

How does the mathematics of a 48 game season work with 30 teams?

I can't divide it out and figure it out. I can't figure out how there will be equal games at home, away and against whom; how the games will be divided. How many against your division, how many against the rest of the conference?

To me, 56 is the number (to me at least)
2 home games and 2 away games against the other teams in your conference.
Isles at Sens twice, Sens visit the Isles twice.
Habs at Tampa twice, Tampa at the Habs twice.
Wild at the Stars twice...etc...
No out of conference play.
Teams 1-8 make the playoffs (no division winners, just one big conference tournament type of thing)

So, is the number 48 workable? If so, how? And, as stated in my opening sentence, is the number 48 being kicked around b/c it was the number of games played in the last truncated season?
