Once his contract is gone, they need to move to get to the cap floor. Trading for Komisarek moves them closer toward that floor while saving them 25 million in buyout money for DiPietro. Komisarek's cap hit is larger than his actual salary, which is exactly the kind of salaries they need.
Additionally, once Komi is off the books they will have room to pay a player that they can actually use to get to the floor instead of paying Ricky while he sits at home.
