I'm not saying he's going to be a 100 point elite 1st line center, but he was given very little offensive opportunity for us last year, with barely any true PP time and being tasked with shutting down other teams top offensive players. a role that he did very well in, for any player, let alone a 19 year old. this kid is going to be a lot better than most people think he will be.
and yakupovs junior numbers, while a bit more offensively inclined and telling, are really not that much better than couts. if you compare their most recent 2 junior seasons...
10-11: 69: 49 - 52 - 101. 1.46 PPG
11-12: 42: 32 - 38 - 69. 1.64 PPG
9-10: 68: 41 - 55 - 96. 1.41 PPG
10-11: 58: 36 - 60 - 96. 1.66 PPG
combined with Couturiers pedigree of being an extremely responsible defensive center, and the fact that centers are typically more valuable than wings, i think a lot of people are being blinded by the fact that Yakupov went 1st overall and Couturier didn't, while Couts could very well end up being the better player...
The only people blinded by it are Oilers fans.
