Hagelin just makes more sense as an energy player on a 3rd line plus it could be a solid shutdown line vs. other teams top lines. Boyle wont score a bunch but he is a good Pker
If we're going by last season it's actually Callahan that is better suited for 3rd line duties, not Hagelin.

Hagelin was ~top 30 in the entire league in even strength points per minute, elite 1st line numbers. While some of it was due to hot streaks and linemates, he produced very well in the bottom 6 when he was called up as well. He had great chemistry with Richards even before Gaborik was out on their line.

Callahan OTOH does most of his scoring on the PP, and has rather pedestrian offensive numbers at ES, where he contributes with his hustle and all-round play - like a 3rd liner.

Hagelin should play with Richards at ES with limited PP time on the 2nd unit since his game doesn't really translate, while Callahan should play on the third line shutting down the opponents at ES, park his ass in front of the net on the our first PP unit and play the PK to perfection as he has done with great success the past two years.

E: All this is assuming Kreider is able to handle top 6 minutes, otherwise there is room for both of them in the top 6.
