If he did officially retire any chance for the Bruins would be gone. Not retiring left some options open for him and the Bruins.

Technically the Bruins could trade his rights to a team looking to get to the cap floor. Thomas does not report. Team 2 gets cap relief without paying one cent in salary. Bruins get cap relief. Tim stays home. Everybody wins. Is this probable? Most likely no. But it is possible if he does not retire.
