Holland lucked out because he is a cheapskate and expects people to want to play in Detroit and take a massive discount. That may work with 3rd or 4th line grinders, but Marian Hossa and Brian Rafalski arent going to happen again.
Eh, since the cap was implemented it is obvious what Detroit does: draft and development to build out your core and then try to fill gaps via free agency. Free agency as we saw this summer is a bit of a crap shoot. If he whiffs on Edler this summer then I think Holland may be forced to go the trade route which he tends to avoid but has done it when necessary (Stuart, Bert).
