In a normal situation, i would agree that the agreement would preclude signing a contract, but the lockout allowed him to legally sign with the khl, and it is quite possible that the agreement did not have language to cover this.

To be honest, i think he has every right to stay, as an intellectual matter. The league locked him out, so it seems reasonable that he be given the option to remain with the alternate position he found in the interim.

The IIHF would never sanction the Russians over a case with these kind of ambiguities anyway.
