I'm not suggesting Bettman could have single handedly prevented the lockout last year, but let's not go overboard and say that he saved hockey -- and ignore that the long-term problems that led to the lockout were built up on his watch. Who oversaw the league overexpanding so that owners could reap the short-term benefits of league entry fees? Who didn't offer any leadership as the product on the ice got worse over a period of years (why did it take a lockout for us to get a meaningful competition committee to make rules changes?) Who didn't address disparity/salary inflation with the owners years ago when it could have been done without leading to a work stoppage?

I don't blame the guy for all the league's problems, past or present, but it's hard to say he's done a good job as commissioner.
