The fact of the matter is that Mike Gillis and Roberto Luongo are preparing to part ways. Gillis has been tasked with trading Luongo, which means that most leverage has been taken away from Gillis in negotiations, regardless of how many times Gillis has said he'd be okay with Cory and Roberto sharing duties heading into the season.

The whole hockey world knows he has to trade Roberto. Mike Gillis has his back against the wall in this particular circumstance, IMO.

That's wishful thinking.
The real GMs that have their backs up against the wall are the ones that have questionable goaltending and risk wasting another season. I think Gillis would be in a much better position with both goalies, making the playoffs, than a team like Toronto that is desperate for goaltending and will miss the playoffs without an upgrade.
If Gillis can't get the offer he wants, he can wait until a team gets desperate and falters as the season goes on due to subpar goaltending.
