It's always the mindset to go into games thinking if you play within yourself, within your system as a team, and work as hard as you can--that you'll win.

To think that the other team just flat-out beat you because they stepped it up and you didn't match them would be a defeatist mentality.

That's what I take from Brind'Amour's comments, and I don't find it to be particularly rare as a comment from players, and find it to be an especially common mindset in any sport (and in any competitive environment).
