Grabner was a 14th overall pick, who had an awful training camp. So Tallon tried sneaking him through waivers. The isles had just lost Okposo to shoulder surger and were glad to take the cheap gamble on Grabner.
34 goals his rookie season, followed by a sophmore slump in 2011-2012:20 goals, $1m salary.
He's due to make $2m this season. Snow is saying in interviews, that he's sticking with his youth movement. Trading 25 yr old Grabner on a very team friendly contract, for 34 yr old Kaberle makes no sense.
It's the eqivalent of the Habs trading Plekanec for Reasoner, who's on his last legs as a pro.
Grabner doesn't have Plekanec's value or track record...and Kaberle at his best was 3x the player Reasoner is. I'm not convinced he is on his last legs, if he is in shape and focused he has 2-3 good years left(#3-4 guy) and possibly 2-3 more as more of a PP specialist(#5-6).
