I don't think that the Oilers would have any interest in this deal.

Volchenkov, who was once one of my favourite defenseman, is a shadow of his former self. He would be fine short term, but his contract is not very attractive and the Oilers would not deal Hemsky for him. Simialrly, I doubt that they would trade Hemsky now for a 34 year old defenseman. So I don't see Tallinder as the key piece for Hemsky.

For all of his health issues, the fact that the Oilers gave Hemsky $5M for two years means that both sides want to give him a chance to prove that he is back to near where he was. He played better at the end of last year, and stayed healthy. Based on how he played in Europe I am pretty sure the Oilers would like to see how Hemsky does in a new role. He likely is being pencilled in to run the #2 pp with Yakupov being the trigger guy.
