IMO, and this is without much knowledge or experience seeing them at all, I would think that higher frame rate would be a better improvement than higher res. Wasn't 24 FPS was chosen back in the day because it was the absolute minimum that looked kind of fluid? And stuff was slower back then too.
As to higher resolution, well it would be useful in the theater. But at home, are screens even big enough and people close enough that you could really see the extra pixels? It's like those iPhone displays. The first jump up was good, but now companies are trying to compete by adding more pixels. But it's starting to get smaller than the dot pitch the eye is capable of seeing. So you're just wasting more data, processing power, and batteries to display stuff you can't even tell. The iPhone screen isn't really that much better because of the resolution. It's more that other stuff (color, contrast, etc) are better.
Although I would guess that there would be some resistance to higher FPS at first. People are used to things like motion blur and it kind of has become expected. Like it becomes this sort of alternate reality that people expect. Sort of like how in video games they add lens flare, when that doesn't represent reality but is simulating the artifacts added by cameras and lenses.
And blu-rays are just starting to get common. Wouldn't we need a new format for either of those improvements?
