Why not? What's the benefit to sending a player home and just waiting for the summer? In that scenario a player could injure himself falling down the stairs or slipping on some ice. This way it is official, over and done with and the team and player can move on. Seems like the best way to go.
Cap hit and salary paid out are the same for the team in both situations.
