What's the deal with these buyouts?
I thought that a player wouldn't get paid more if the re-signed with a new team but instead their old team would simply need to pay less.
For example, if Gomez gets bought out, he'll get $10M ($5.5M, $4.5M) in buyout money and as a result, if he signs for less than that, he will not make more than $5.5M this season, it just means that he old team would have to pay less with his new team picking up some slack...can anyone confirm?
If so, it really makes sense for Gomez to sign for the minimum to stick it to the Habs after they had him show up for camp just to sit him out.
