I love to see hitting, but...

I wouldn't say defenseman a is better than defenseman b because he hits more, nor would I say he's a tougher defenseman. Some defenseman are very adept in regards to their positional play. Putting yourself between the puck and the oncoming opposing forward, and retaining possession and safely moving it out of the zone is just as effective, if not more effective, than taking out a forward along the boards. Taking a hit effecitvely, and moving the puck, is also important and doesn't show up in the stat sheet.

This is not meant to be a commentary on Malik, but hitting in general. You have guys who can have several hits per game, and spent half the game out of position going for the hits. Others that may make the hit, get credit for it, but do not get control of the puck and clear. The objective is to move it safely out of the zone. However that's done, be it physically or other, doesn't matter to me.
