Length of the pads shot way up from the late 80s through the 90s. It allowed a goalie to go into a butterfly position and cover the entire bottom part of the net, where the majority of the goals were scored. Goalies were wearing pads to slightly above the low pant line. Now the pads go up to their shoulders!
