That is probably what they are hoping for, so that they will not have his cap on their books anymore (it'll be on someone else's). If he clears though, they would have to try to eat half his salary and deal him, as that would save them more than assigning him to the AHL or buying him out (which I'm not sure they can even do since he's a FA at year's end).
