You have this backwards, if anything.

Gomez has been given tons of opportunities and just doesn't have it anymore. The poor fella is just spent. In the last 118 NHL games, he has 9 goals and 40 assists. He isn't going to see first or second line duties wherever he winds up, so you can expect his production to suffer even more playing on the 3rd line. He won't score enough to justify a 3rd line roster spot on a team that runs an offensive scheme on the 3rd line and he just doesn't fit in on any team looking for a defensive 3rd line center.

As far as I know, nobody within the Rangers organization EVER thought Redden was unworthy of the NHL. Redden just wasn't worth his huge cap hit, so it was in their best interests to demote him and bring talent that was.
