Laich has the same complimentary offensive forward skill set, but brings a lot more to the table defensively and in other roles. Laich can be a stopgap top six center, or an excellent bottom six center. He can play a shutdown role, kill penalties, and take tough defensive zone assignments.
Lupul has about the same offensive potential as Laich, but isn't near the same player Laich is everywhere else on the ice.

Because Laich's role changed. If he was still in a top six, complimentary winger role with 1st unit PP time, his numbers would be fine. Instead, he's been used more in a shutdown line role, with less time on the 1st PP unit.
