I was disappointed by Glennon's article today. He spent a fair amount of space talking about Marc Savard or quoting someone talking about Marc Savard but never once mentioned why he isn't a legitimate option in the eyes of the Predators: He's terrible in his own zone! There's a reason that Perreault wasn't dressed as the season wound down and the intensity importance of each game ratcheted up. Despite his offensive numbers and impressive production considering the quality of ice time, he is an extreme liability out there because he's a terrible defensive player. Yet we would target Marc Savard, who makes Paul Kariya look like a Selke finalist?

If you are going to drop two paragraphs on a guy, do the Predators' fanbase a favor and go deeper on why he isn't considered a valid option: Price + Size + Defensive ability. Poile's going to pay him lipservice and won't tip his hand one way or the other, but common sense would go a long way in this regard. The Preds just don't tolerate centers who can't play defense. From Randy Robitaille to Yannic Perreault to a young Legwand and Arkhipov, you will play defense if you play center. If not, when the time comes to ice the best team possible in order to advance, you will not make the roster. Trotz would rather give ice time to someone with one leg than a 25 goal scorer who can't backcheck.
