A signing bonus would be a sign of good faith from the team, and it would allow them to also lower the initial year salary.

He's missed 2 games, and I think it's safe to say he's not playing tonight. That means he'd get about 55% of his contract value this year unless part of it is a signing bonus.

You could give him a $3.5 million salary in Year 1, make $1.5 million a signing bonus, and he'd end up collecting nearly 75% of the actual cash value of his salary instead of just 55%.
