The right play (after making the decision to develop him in the NHL), was to build up his strengths. Maximize his style of play. Not get obsessed with his size and try to make him something he's not.

But hey... if you don't want to attribute his regression to reality, you can stick with generic phrases like "defensemen take longer to develop".
