He should have been signed at a number reflective of his current value, including the fact he is an RFA, with a discount based on how badly he clearly wanted to remain with the team.

I agree that the goal should be to limit contract sizes. But offering someone far below market value (this is below market value by at least 1/3, even for an RFA deal) and refusing to back off on that when you know the other party is in a weak negotiating position does not lead to a positive long term relationship. Maybe Bergevin can repair it. Who knows. 2 years to find out.
My money is on Subban either getting massively paid, or being moved.
