However, the New York Rangers play in the state of New York. Your comparison is about as terrible as Kyle Turris' opinion of Scandanavia.
The City of Ottawa was merged into a larger urban city about 10 years ago. So the population of Ottawa went from like 350,000 to like 800,000. Before that, The arena was in Kanata. Kanata was it's own city of about 90,000. But since the merger of all the smaller cities that are now just the city of Ottawa, the arena is technically 'in' Ottawa.

They changed street names throughout the city so there were no streets with the same name in different former cities. I live in Kanata and I can address my Mail with Ottawa and it is fine.
