if you're going to Rio for the Olympics then go and have fun - if you're wanting to go to S. Am. in general then I'd say go to Buenos Aires (and also see Argentina)...BA is my favourite city by far in S. Am. Santiago and Lima are also nice enough - but go there if you're planning to also see Chile/Peru.
As far as Sao Paolo ... it's fine...but you're not doing much there.
ETA - if anyone is seriously thinking about taking a trip to South America and wants any recommendations feel free to message me - I'm happy to give you tips.

Glad it sounds like you had an awesome time there. Playa's gorgy! I'm not sure how it is in the US but the Canadian press has taken to making it sound like Mexico is where you go if you want to be beheaded by drug lords
Mexico's an awesome place to go for a vacation and the Playa del Carmen is so wonderful.
