Last year he was #18 in scoring and #12 in +/-. There are 30 teams so there are 30 #1 defensemen. There are 16 #1 playoff team defensemen. His defense was also acceptable.

This year he's begun with a point per game performance in the first 6 games and his defense continued to improve. I think if he can keep this up and score 27 points in a shortened season, which would likely put him in the top 10 in defensemen scoring, a case can be made that he's a top pairing defenseman.
He's not really flashy (no huge shot or amazing skating or puck handling all the time) and he'll forever have to fight the stigma of being bad defensively.

He's certainly playing well now at least. Having Staal as his partner helps a lot but switching to the right side and doing a much better job of it has been a big step for him
