First of all, yes, Carolina has an improved forward group. But they've somehow managed to become worse defensively from last year. Replacing one of the few crease-clearers we had (Allen) with Joe Corvo and Bobby Sanguinetti (neither should be seeing NHL ice at the moment) was the worst idea.

Second, this topic is exactly why Ward isn't overrated. Because people don't watch the games, see Ward had a poor statline, and assume Ward is to blame.

Lets throw some knowledge out here:

- Ward has faced over 4500 shots the past two seasons. That's more than any other goaltender in the same time period. About 500 shots more, in fact. He's made more saves than most goaltenders face in shots.
- Over the past two years, he's played in 28 games where he's faced 40 or more shots. That's more than Lundqvist, Price, Miller, Quick, and Fleury...combined. It's also about 1 out of every 5 starts.
- Despite this absurd workload, he's posted a respectable .918 SV% in that same timespan. Behind a defense that's less than stellar and a team that can't make the playoffs.

Even tonight, which I'm assuming prompted this topic, how many defensive breakdowns has Ward prevented from burning the Canes? Yeah, the goal wasn't great to give up, but let enough odd man rushes and one will cost you eventually.
