It really isn't any different. The Oilers get a third round draft pick for sliding about 10-15 picks down the pick order and forgoing the $2.5 million extortion demand. The major difference is the tyoe of player they got. The grabbed a defenseman with Niinimaa upside instead of a forward with Smyth upside. Not a lot of difference except where the hole is filled. Based on the needs of the Oilers I don't think it would have mattered which deal was completed, neither filled the needs of the team.
