So they wanted a defensive team since 2010, and yet they allowed Tallinder and Lydman to walk. Blame ownership or management for that, I don't care, but it's tough to say you're trying to implement a defensive system and then allow your 2nd and 3rd best defensemen to walk, say nothing for failing to replace the difficult defensive minutes that Gaustad played, or the high amount of two-way minutes that Roy played.
In my estimation, the moves they've actually made prove that any indications they were trying to become a "defensive" team was nothing more than mere lip service. In any event, I don't think they were trying to become a defensive team. I think they desire to be a roster comprised mostly of "two-way players" with a few specialists here and there. In that regard, they've also failed.
