Yeah the Lions are a terrible comparison, they have to fill 8 home dates a season and can rely on the NFL hype machine to do so.

The Pistons are a more relevant comparison. The Pistons led the NBA in attendance between 2003 and 2008, the last two years they've been 28th i.e. one of the worst draws in the league. They drew extremely well as a championship contender and top tier team but once they moved very quickly towards being a bad team and bottom-dweller the attendance dropped like a lead balloon, they averaged 22,000 a few years ago, now it's a bit over 14,000 in announced attendance. In other words they are back to where they were in about 2001, a poorly regarded joke.

People will blame the Palace and its location but the reality is that this didn't stop people when the team got results and also even if we accept it's a worse location than the Joe, basketball is the more popular sport so that probably evens it out.

If anyone think this can't happen to the Wings, well, they weren't around in the 70s and 80s.
