Considering he was a 19/20 year old, it wasn't that surprising though. Teams will generally try to pick out proven players capable of handling pressure that are more mentally mature and ready for so much pressure. Therefore guys in their prime 22-32 years of age are much more likely candidates for the roster. Teens - not as much - but there'll always be the few exceptions (Doughty at 21 and Toews at 22 were the youngest players).

Stamkos was only in his 2nd pro year and no one was willing to gamble the olympics on the fact that he'd be such a consistent beast. Although Doughty wasn't that far ahead in development, he'd shown consistency and wasn't expected to play such a big role on the team. They were probably just looking to inject some youth into the team.

Stamkos is such a force right now that it'd be asinine for HC to leave him off the roster.

Spezza was snubbed even for the World Championships after calling them to ask them for a spot on the team despite most of Canada's best players being in the playoffs. No way he gets a look when all the best players are available, even if he's ripping up the NHL.
