Bruins clear cap space, so they can add in a deadline buyer trade, even if they never get the pick, win for them.

Isles get locked-in 35+ cap space so that if they trade Streit or Visnovsky or whoever they might consider trading if they end up selling at the deadline, there is no danger they go below the floor. They must have run their numbers and found it could be close if they did make somesuch moves, so wanted to add a bit more. Or Chiarelli ran them and told them about the possibility, whichever. Bonus for the Isles is that they don't have to pay Thomas anything to still get the cap hit. Maybe it's even a second bonus if they can toll his contract and get the phantom cap hit to reach next year's floor too?
It's sort of a win-win for the Islanders even next year, either they find a way to extend the phantom cap hit, or they use him as leverage if Nabakov wants to come back.

I hate seeing CBA loopholes exploited like this, it breaks the league, but Boston and the Islanders are just playing the game.
