Sometimes a guy just lazily/recklessly rides a guy's numbers for a ride into the boards, but there ARE times when I notice defensemen not bracing/positioning themselves "properly" to make those kinds of plays while also making a play on the puck - if that's their decision in that situation. It kills me, but what are the refs to do, right? It's how they play defense these days (and forwards do it as a tactic to win puck battles, too).
I concur, giving up your back seems to be all too common nowadays...some of the onus of these boarding calls has to be put back on the player who turns intentionally.
